Summary / Abstract:

ENOn the grounds of certain folklore materials, preserved in the Archives of Lithuanian Folklore, the author discusses shifting notion of the folk song identity. These materials include collections and recordings by Emilija Zaukaitė-Kuzavinienė (1903-1992), who worked as a teacher in a small Lithuanian town before the World War II, reflecting the folk singing history in several generations of her family (first written down by herself in 1934 and phonograph recorded in 1936). After her passing away, her daughter and her grandchildren, participating in the movement of the modem folklore ensembles, have further transmitted the songs. The author of the article draws several conclusions. In the oral tradition, the notion of the song identity rested upon its essentially similar repetition, when the like learned from the like on basically the same terms, and thus the piece was transmitted unscathed from one generation to another. Yet totally different picture emerges upon examining the activities of the folk song performers. Here the presence of the learned folklore theory can be felt from the very beginning in the folk song recording and dissemination process, thus making folklore studies into the life source of the folklore itself. The whole situation turns upside down if compared to the traditional culture: folklore is born of folkloristics. [From the publication]
