Concept of love in Vydūnas's fictional works
Summary / Abstract:

Reikšminiai žodžiai: Erosas; Geismas; Meilė; Moteriškumas; Moteriškumas ir vyriškumas; Vyriškumas; Eros; Feminity; Love; Masculinity; Masculinity and femininity; Sexual desire.

ENThe paper analyses Vydūnas’ concept of love between sexes. The nature of masculine and feminine aspects and the phenomena of eros, passion and lust and their role in the being of a human are highlighted. When exploring the issues of love and the culture of sexes, Vydūnas’ fictional works reveal even more in some aspects than his work “Gimdymo slėpiniai” [The Mysteries of Birth] that focuses on these issues. The philosopher relates masculinity to the rational element and material culture and femininity to the irrational (intuitive) element and the culture of humanity. Dissemination and expression of both elements determine the creation of a harmonious and evolving society. Love, hidden deep in the nature of a human being, leads the loving person to opening to the being, consciousness, harmony, the experience of unity and spiritual maturity. Love between sexes in Vydūnas’ works is related to the platonic eros; his nature is related to a great power (the demonic and divine aspects), like in the works of psychoanalysts Jung and May. The most important function of love and eros is excitation of the human essence and his spiritual powers; the second function being participation in creation when starting a new life. Passion and lust are related to the psychophysical nature of a human being. Vydūnas considers the control of sexual desires (lust) as an internal discipline determining the individual’s spiritual health and harmony. Lust is viewed as the desire grown out of bad habits which distorts the inherent powers of a human being and exerts a destructive impact on the life of both individual and society. If love between sexes is made primitive and is associated with sex (flesh), eros and love – the two most important aspects in the relationship between sexes – are lost.
