Summary / Abstract:

ENThe nicknames of the Tauragnai area were commenced to be collected more than two decades ago. Certain nicknames of the residents of Tauragnai area still perform the function of the surname, i. e. the nickname: 1) denotes the person; 2) is spread onto all the members of the family; 3) is inherited throughout several generations. The surnames, which originate from nicknames, in terms of origins, are more Lithuanian, i. e. they originate from names of animals, plants, crafts or nationalities or from the words, denoting a place of residence, physical traits, the character, material or marital status of the person and sometimes even from verbs, adjectives and exclamatives. The Tauragnai area has an especially large number of fellow-surname people and certain surnames even coincide with the names of villages (in this case the names of villages are of a personal name origin) therefore a significant share of surnames, undoubtedly, emerged due to objective reasons. Apart from the objective reasons for emergence of surnames, there are also subjective ones. Surnames are most usually given according to a certain exceptional trait, i. e. a rare peculiarity which is not characteristic of the rest of the community. Therefore the nickname kind of preserves the nonstandard trait. The article provides an overview of the reasons and motives for emergence of nicknames of persons of Tauragnai area and makes attempts to identify the traits, which are typical of the former and existing residents of the area and the ones which are not, in other words, attempts are made to paint the portraits of a typical and a non-typical resident of Tauragnai area according to the motives of nicknames. The nicknames are grouped according to the origins and motives of emergence: nicknames resulting from the family, appearance, activities, way of talking, place of residence and associations are distinguished.
