Summary / Abstract:

ENThe object of the article – the problem of popularizing the topic of Lithuanian weddings on the internet. The goal – reveal the informativeness and reliability of excerpts from ethnological publications on the internet, online articles about Lithuanian wedding ceremonies, and discuss how Internet readers evaluated the information presented. Comparative analysis and indirect observation methods are used. Online articles on the theme of weddings are of a various nature. The studied articles are separated into three main groups according to their nature: synthetic, interviews and essay or critic genre. Articles of the synthetic nature familiarize with Lithuanian wedding, explain the meanings of the rituals. The interview genre and advertisement articles are informative in the sense of being relevant today. Essay or report genre articles are characterized by a critical approach to Lithuanian weddings. A study of short popular articles on the study of Lithuanian weddings showed that their spectrum is relatively wide in the sense of interpretation and accuracy. However, the authors highlighted their desire (or from the lips of the wedding planners) to educate Lithuanians on how to celebrate weddings. There is a campaign for a more modest feast without traditional matchmakers and musicians, less food and alcohol consumed – minimization of rituals is a characteristic feature of modern weddings. Article comments reveal the readers’ focus on some symbolic wedding actions: this study examines Internet reader evaluations of carrying brides over a bridge and the matchmaker’s court. Internet readers highlighted that the fate of relevant new practices and customs is fragile especially when their transition takes place. One new practice becomes custom (bridges), while other traditional symbolic actions (matchmaker’s court) are rarely ever done. The study showed that thematic web portals, internet articles on Lithuanian wedding ceremonies and customs provide eclectic information and is not a reliable source of information for those who wish to understand the peculiarities of Lithuanian weddings. Online articles often meet the needs of readers who limit themselves to the desire to learn more about modern weddings, their etiquette, decorations, various games and the like, while historical data (whether it Lithuanian traditions or those of other nations) interests them in two aspects: 1) as much as the information is interesting, and 2) how this can be applied to specific weddings. Online articles do not include Lithuanian wedding ceremonies, analyzed in ethnographic researcher descriptions.
