Summary / Abstract:

ENOn the basis of analysis of terminological innovations which occur in Lithuanian terminology, these things can be stated: 1) Normativeness of innovations has in itself two sides. On one side it is directed to literary norms, on the other, to terminological requirements. Thus terminological neologisms, like all terms, have to meet the requirements of literary norms and terminological requirements. Only such normativenss could be an objective criterion for evaluation of the neologism both in written texts and in usage. 2) A native language term has to be used as an equal equivalent next to a borrowed neologism, which in fact is the true borrowing. They can only be spoken about as alternatives if such synonymy exists. 3) Each time a borrowing is accepted, it has to be substantiated. First of all, the borrowing has to enter other languages firmly and to become a truly international word, e.g. Lithuanian term kvarkas, Russian кварк, English quark, German Quark-, Lithuanian term lazeris, Russian лазер, English laser, German Laser. Secondly, every borrowing has to be substantiated and justified only by necessity.
