ENThis article discusses the spiritual situation in Europe during the third and fourth decades of the 20th century. Emphasis is placed on the existential philosophy (also on M. Heidegger, R.M. Rilke, A. Camus) which provided the stimulus for Nyka-Niliūnas' reflections and diary entries. We present briefly the Lithuanian writers of the 1920's, giving special attention to V. Mačernis and A. Nyka-Niliūnas. The selfconsciousness of the two poets is seen as being very close. Our analysis of the early diaries of A. Nyka-Niliūnas points out the significance of the feeling of home and of things, also the poet's perception of everyday life. The style of the diaries is analysed, too. In conclusion, we establish connections between the self-consciousness in Nyka-Niliūnas' diaries and similar trends in European cultures. [text from author]
