Summary / Abstract:

ENDuring the Wallach Reform, parcels of the lord's lands or of emerging towns were allocated for future churches. Unfortunately, the inventory for wallach measurement used in Gandinga has not survived to the present day. On 10 February 1570, a new church in Gandinga was supplied with the inventory, and in 1578, the town of Plungė was first mentioned. Since the beginning of the 17th c. the tenure of the estate of Plungė was also referred to as the neighbourhood. The list of churches of the Diocese of Žemaičiai drafted around 1592–1595 included a Plungė church of "heretics". In 1636, the synod attributed the church of Plungė to the Deanery of Rietavas. A visitation act of 1675 sais that the old church of Plungė was demolished and a new big wooden church and chapels were built on that place. The form of the church was not described. It was only mentioned that it had one tower and was covered with oak shingles. In 1948, the registration of churches was conducted. This meant that all the churches, chapels, presbyteries and other property of parishes were nationalised. After Stalin's death, the oppression of churches gained slightly milder forms. In 1958, the durable parson of Plungė Bernardas Aleksiejūnas built a house for priests and a new presbytery; however, he had to register it as a private building. It was not prohibited to repair churches, but it was complicated to receive financing for constructional material. In 1976, the presbytery was decorated, later the roof of the church was painted, the churchyard was furnished, and the brick fence was constructed. In 1978–1981, the church had second windows built in, heating introduced, as well as new benches, liturgical inventory and apparel acquired. A new broadcasting system was installed in the church.
