Summary / Abstract:

ENThere have been a few attempts to recognize the real degree of regime control and deformations in the Soviet Lithuanian theatre and they mostly represented the deformations as the result of censorship. It is true, yet censorship as an institutional censorship, i.e. as a restraint of public expression of ideas, was just one medium of the overall machinery of control employed by the communist party, during the soviet period. Alongside the institutional forms, other less straight and less documented forms of control can be observed as crucial to functioning of art in the totalitarian society. The article deals with different forms of restraint, ideological pressure, and control machinery during the late soviet period, the Brezhnev years, trying to outline the damage and the deformations it brought to Lithuanian stage practices. Different circumstances, such as isolation, centralism and highly institutionalized order can be seen as parallel to institutional political censorship and all of these totalitarian strategics amalgamate forming the overall effect of all-censorship (or pancensorship) - the true condition of culture under the totalitarian regime. The indirect and hidden ways of exercising control over different phenomena of culture, during the late soviet period corresponded to the general internal policy of ostensible liberalization, undertaken by the party after Stalin's death and often referred to as "mature totalitarianism", or "posttotalitarianism".
