LTStraipsnyje aptariami būdingiausi Viduramžių epochos bruožai, atsižvelgiant į tai, kad ši kone tūkstantmečio epocha nebuvo vientisas istorijos laikotarpis. Todėl pradžioje apibūdinama Viduramžių sąvokos istorija ir prieštaringi epochos vertinimai. Taip pat nusakomi epochos periodizacijos kriterijai ir lūžiniai momentai. Atskirai nagrinėjamas probleminis „lietuviškųjų Viduramžių“ klausimas. Taip jau susiklostė, kad Lietuva lotyniškus viduramžių civilizacijos elementus atrado ir pradėjo recipuoti tik epochai baigiantis, vėlyvaisiais Viduramžiais. Mindaugo krikštas ir karūnacija XIII a. viduryje, nors ir neįgavę tęstinumo, vis dėlto vertintini kaip Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės (LDK) pritapimo prie europinių Viduramžių civilizacijos pradžia. „Trumpųjų“ Lietuvos Viduramžių metu (XIII–XV/XVI a.) buvo spėta perimti tik dalį šios civilizacijos reiškinių (lotyniškas raštas, gotikinė architektūra, riterių kultūra, šventųjų kultai ir kt.), tačiau ši epocha sukūrė prielaidas sparčiam LDK europėjimui. ENThe article discusses the most characteristic features of the Middle Ages taking into consideration the fact that this epoch that lasted almost one thousand years was not an integral period of history. Therefore at first the history of the conception of the Middle Ages and contradictory valuations of the epoch are defined. Also, criteria for the periodic nature of the epoch and its turning points are specified. The problematic issue of the “Lithuanian Middle Ages” is discussed separately. What happened was that Lithuania discovered the Latin elements of the civilisation of the Middle Ages and began to accept them only when the epoch was drawing to an end, in the late Middle Ages. Baptism and coronation of Mindaugas in the middle of the 13th century, though they did not acquire continuity, are valued as the beginning of adaptation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania to the European civilisation of the Middle Ages. During the “short” Middle Ages of Lithuania (the 13th – the 15th/16th century) only a part of the phenomena of this civilisation (the Latin script, gothic architecture, culture of the Knights, cults of the saints, etc.) were taken over, however, this epoch created preconditions for rapid Europeanisation of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.
