LTStraipsnyje pateikiama Europos Sąjungos (ES) kilmės, raidos ir pagrindinių institucijų apžvalga. Pirmiausia aptariama ES samprata, viršnacionalumo bruožai ir ES skirtumai nuo tradicinių tarptautinių organizacijų. Antrame straipsnio skyriuje nagrinėjamos Europos politinės koncepcijos ištakos ir raida iki 1951 m. Europos anglių ir plieno bendrijos įsteigimo sutarties pasirašymo. Trečias skyrius apžvelgia tolimesnius Europos integracijos procesus, Europos Bendrijų kūrimosi raidą iki Šaltojo karo pabaigos, vėlesnę ES plėtrą, taip pat Mastrichto, Amsterdamo ir Nicos sutarčių institucines pasekmes. ENThe article provides an overview of the origins, development and main institutions of the European Union (the EU). First of all the concept of the EU, the traits of super-nationality and the differences of the EU from the traditional international organizations are discussed. The second section of the article examines the beginnings of the European political concept and its development before the undersigning of the Treaty Establishing the European Coal and Steel Community in 1951. The third section provides an overview of the further European integration processes, the development of the European Communities prior to the end of the Cold War, the later EU development and the institutional consequences of the treaties of Mastricht, Amsterdam and Nice. The table of the most important dates of development of the EU (before 2003) is provided. The remaining parts of the overview provide brief descriptions of the EU institutions, resolving the most important issues of further development of the EU (the European Council, the Council of Ministers, the European Parliament, the EU Commission, the European Court of Justice and the Court of first Instance, the Audit Chamber, the Economic and Social Affairs Committee, the Regions Committee, the European Investment Bank, the European Central Banking System and the Central Bank of Europe) and discuss the system of institutional competences.
