Summary / Abstract:

ENNobody was so prominent between the Lithuanian kings as St. Casimir (1458-1484). Riding himself of all sins in the world, he trusted his life to God. In 1602 the Catholic Church recognized him Saint. Since then many of Lithuanian art people had devoted to Saint Casimir a various works. Gediminas Purlys (b. 1948) is a famous Lithuanian choirmaster and pedagogue, the church organist and composer of religious music. In 1971 he graduated from the Lithuanian State Conservatoire Department of the Choir Masters, with the associate professor N. Kazakauskienė. Since 1972 he was teaching at the Faculties of Arts at Klaipėda University. In 1975 G. Purlys started an extra-mural post graduate course of P. Tchaikovsky Conservatoire in Moscow with the professor K. Ptica. In 1985 G. Purlys has been awarded a pedagogical academic degree of an assistant professor and since 1992 he was a professor. Living in Klaipėda, he participated actively in the music life, with his choruses taking a part in different choral projects: Lithuanian Song festivals, Baltic students' festival, World Lithuanian Song festival and etc. Several times his choirs were awarded as price winners in a various choral contests. Since 1990 G. Purlys was leading the mixed choir of Marry the Queen of Peace church. In 1989-1991 he was invited to lead the Lithuanian M.K. Čiurlionis's folk ensemble in Cleveland (USA), and he revived and strengthened it. G. Purlys, the leader of ensemble initiated its first successful concert trip in Lithuania, where he won an outstanding authority as choirs master.Composer's activity in the Catholic choir music sphere was growing consistently since the beginning of the Lithuanian Independence. It was greatly influenced by lack of different genres in the Lithuanian churches, and was inspired by choirmaster's practice. G. Purlys had composed more as 100 sacral choral pieces, and was an author of his six masses. The great part of his choral pieces and all his masses were published and performed in a different concerts and music festivals. Choral music by Professor had been performing by various choirs, as well as during the Inauguration Day of the Lithuanian President V. Adamkus - it was the Mass D-major, number 4. Two of his masses were recorded in CD (2006). In 1999 the "Mass in honor of Marry, the Queen of Peace" won the first premium at the choir competition of J. Naujalis. Nevertheless, the musical style of G. Purlys had never been investigated and discussed properly. So the aim of article is to point the main features of his religious music, taking the complex analyses of the "Mass of St. Casimir, the Patron of Lithuania". Six masses by G. Purlys exceeded the frames of liturgical service. In addition to the standart Latin Missa text, sometimes Purlys organizes it by inserting a sacral text from other sources. Every movement of it is well paced, balanced in the choral parts, and really glows in the moments when just organ, mostly supporting the choral parts, and choir combine. As composer, he was adherent to the classical traditions in having outgrown a reliance on classical models […].
