The Battle of Orsza in 1514: struggle of interpretations in Belarus

LTOršos mūšis baltarusių tautiniam sąjūdžiui yra tapęs simboliu. Baltarusių istoriografijoje 1514 m. įvykiai traktuoti tautinio naratyvo plotmėje, pabrėždami skirtumą tarp rusų ir baltarusių. Vaclovas Lastauskis, parašęs pirmąją trumpą baltarusiams skirtą baltarusiškai parašytą Baltarusijos istoriją, LDK ir Maskvos kovoms skyrė daug dėmesio, kaip ir 1919 m. Vsevolodas Ignatovičius. Juoba abu LDK laikė lietuvių ir baltarusių valstybe. Nepaisant to, po 1930 m. Minske istoriją imta interpretuoti kitaip. Lastauskio ir Ignatovičiaus knygos uždraustos kaip „buržuazinės nacionalistinės“. Apie Oršos mūšį nustota rašyti. Po Antrojo pasaulinio karo imta ypač pabrėžti bendrą rusų, ukrainiečių ir baltarusių kilmę. Iki XX a. devinto dešimtmečio pabaigos apie jokias maskvėnų kovas su LDK Baltarusijos teritorijoje nerašyta. Gorbačiovo pertvarkos laikotarpiu istorikų jaunimas ėmė reikalauti peržiūrėti visą Baltarusijos istoriją. 1989 m. vyko diskusija mokyklinių vadovėlių klausimu. Po SSRS žlugimo baltarusių istoriografija susidūrė su poreikiu kurti savąją versiją, paneigiant rusų ir lenkų istoriografijos mitus. Juoba kad naujoji Rusija, naujoji Lenkija ir naujoji Lietuva ėmėsi kurti naujas arba koreguoti senąsias interpretacijas. Dabar Baltarusijoje parengta daug darbų LDK ir Rusijos karų bei, konkrečiai, Oršos mūšio tema. ENThe Battle of Orsha became a symbol for the national movement of Belarus. The historiography of Belarus interprets the events of 1514 in the context of the national narrative emphasising the difference between Russians and Belarusians. Vaclau Lastouski, the author of a short history of Belarus for Belarusians, paid a great deal of attention to battles between the GDL and Moscow. These issues also attracted Vsevolodas Ignatovičius’ attention in 1919. The both considered the GDL to be a state of Belarusians and Lithuanians. Despite the above facts, Minsk’s new interpretation of the history developed after 1930. Books by Lastouski and Ignatovičius were banned as “bourgeois nationalistic” books. No further written records were made about the Battle of Orsha. After World War II, the common origin of Russians, Ukrainians and Belarusians is emphasized. No battles of Muscovites with the GDL in the territory of Belarus are mentioned in written sources before the end of the ninth decade of the 20th c. During Gorbachev’s Perestroika, young historians began demanding to revise the history of Belarus. In 1989, a discussion over school textbooks took place. After the collapse of the USSR, the historiography of Belarus faced the need to create its own version thus denying all myths of the Russian and Polish historiography. Moreover, the new Russia, new Poland and new Lithuania started creating new interpretations or revising the old ones. At present, Belarus has produced a great deal of works on the topic of wars between the GDL and Russia, and specifically the Battle of Orsha. Current Belarusians’ attitudes towards the Battle of Orsha are divided into those who believe it was a “holy war for the Motherland” and those perceiving it as an episode in the history of Russian internecine wars.
