LTRecenzijoje aptariama papildytas ir pakoreguotas lituanisto, baltų kraštų literatūros ir istorijos žinovo vengro Endre Bojtäro knygos „Baltistikos įvadas. Senovės baltų kultūra“ vertimą į anglų kalbą. Knygos stuburą sudaro dvi dalys – antroji, kurioje nušviečiama baltų genčių ir tautų istorija, pradedant nuo indoeuropiečių protėvynės hipotezių ir baigiant knygnešių ir daraktorių laikais, ir ketvirtoji, skirta mitologijos dalykams. Kitose dalyse pateikiamos baltų kalbų bei tarmių charakteristikos, enciklopediniai duomenys apie senąją raštiją ir pasvarstymai apie baltistiką, baltų raidą bei gintaro kelią. Tačiau knyga iškrinta iš bendro analogiškos tematikos darbų konteksto. Pirmiausia veikalą parašė ne kalbininkas, o humanitaras, lietuvių literatūros vertėjas, žurnalistas, kultūrininkas. Antra, ieškojimus įprasmina ne neutralus mokslinis, o publicistinis stilius, mitologijos dalyje įgyjantis poleminės aistros. Kalbiniams klausimams knygos autorius skiria mažiau dėmesio ir mažiau dėl jų polemizuoja, tačiau dažnu atveju pasako turįs savo nuomonę ar entuziastingai remias kurią nors (pvz. Lietuvos vardo etimologijos) hipotezę. Norėtųsi, kad atskirų baltų kalbų ypatybės būtų apžvelgiamos pagal tam tikrą sistemą arba apsiribojant tik pačiomis svarbiausiomis, o ne parinktomis savo nuožiūra ir ne visada tiksliai suformuluotomis. Vienu kitu atveju autorius pateikia neteisingas datas, iškreipiančias baltų kalbotyros istoriją ar baltų kalbų bei kultūrų formavimosi chronologiją. ENThe review discusses the revised and supplemented translation into English of the book “Baltistikos įvadas. Senovės baltų kultūra” [Foreword to the Past: A Cultural History of the Baltic People] by the linguist of Lithuanian and specialist of Baltic literature and history, Hungarian Endre Bojtär. The core of the book consists of two parts: the second part features the history of Baltic tribes and nations, starting with the hypotheses of the Indo-European original homeland and finishing with the period of book smugglers and secret school teachers, and the fourth part focuses on mythology issues. Other parts present the characteristics of the Baltic languages and dialects, encyclopaedic data about the old writings, and considerations about Baltic studies, development and the amber road. This treatise was written not by a linguist, but a scholar of the humanities, translator of Lithuanian literature, journalist and cultural figure. His research is conveyed not by a neutral scientific style, but by a publicist style which acquires polemic heat in the mythology part. The author of the book pays less attention to and less debates the linguistic issues, yet he frequently states his position or enthusiastically supports some hypotheses. The features of separate Baltic languages should be viewed in accordance with a certain system, or the author should focus only on the most important features rather than choose them at his own discretion and not always formulate them accurately. In some cases the author gives wrong dates that distort the history of Baltic linguistics or the chronology of the formation of the Baltic languages and cultures. A more attentive reader who knows the Baltic languages will notice frequent mistakes in words or their forms.
