Inventing the locus: rethinking place and identity in Lithuanian theatre

LTStraipsnyje analizuojama, kaip šiuolaikiniame Lietuvos mene keičiasi vietos suvokimas ir reprezentacija. Tradiciniu požiūriu egzistuoja metafizinis ryšys tarp identiteto ir vietos. Nacionalistinėje mitologijoje šį ryšį simbolizuoja augalas, pavyzdžiui, medis (ąžuolas arba beržas), įaugęs į dirvą, panašiai kaip tauta, kurią maitina gimtoji žemė, jos kraujas. Nacionalinis teatras kaip institucija, skirta vietinei publikai ir reprezentuojanti tautos dvasią, išreiškia šią metafizinę vietos sampratą. Apžvelgus XX amžiaus lietuvių režisierių ir dramaturgų kūrybą matyti, kad jiems labai svarbi augalo simbolika. Vis dėlto šiuolaikinės transnacionalizmo ir globalizacijos patirtys verčia menininkus ir publiką kritiškai apmąstyti nacionalizmo metafiziką ir nacionalinio identiteto idėją. Šiame straipsnyje vietos ir identiteto vaizduotės kaita tiriama pasitelkiant du šiuolaikinio meno pavyzdžius: 2004 metų Rimo Tumino spektaklį Madagaskaras, pastatytą pagal Mariaus Ivaškevičiaus pjesę, ir Lietuvos medijų menininkų Gedimino ir Nomedos Urbonų projektą Ruta Remake, parodytą tais pačiais metais Šiuolaikinio meno centre, Vilniuje. Abu kūriniai nevengia nacionalumo, autentiškumo, vietos metafizikos temų, juos galima suvokti kaip kritišką organicistinės nacionalizmo vizijos perrašymą, kai pabrėžiamas išradingumas, o ne metafizinė vietos galia.

ENThe article analyses the way the perception and representation of place changes in the modern art of Lithuania. With regard to the traditional attitude, there is a metaphysical link between identity and place. In nationalistic mythology this link is symbolised by a plant, for example a tree (an oak or a birch) grown into the soil, similarly to a nation fed by the native earth and its blood. The national theatre as an institution is indented for the local public. It represents the spirit of the nation and expresses this metaphysical concept of place. A review of works of Lithuanian directors and playwrights of the 20th century shows that the symbol of a plant is very important to them. However, the experience of modern transnationalism and globalisation force artists and the public to critically consider the metaphysics of nationalism and the idea of national identity. In this article the change of place and identity imagination is analysed through two examples of modern art: a performance “Madagascar” directed by Rimas Tuminas in 2004 on the basis of the play by Marius Ivaškevičius, and the project “Ruta remake” by Lithuanian media artist Gediminas and Nomeda Urbonas, which was presented in 2004 in the Centre of Contemporary Art in Vilnius. The both works do not avoid the themes of nationalism, authenticity and the metaphysics of place. They can be perceived as rewriting of the vision of nationalism, when the inventiveness and not the metaphysical power of place are emphasized.
