Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article is about herds' games. It is noted the the first days of herding were very hard because the animals that went out for the first time were hard to supervise and the weather was still cold. The author describes the spring games of herds which were active and helped to keep warm, also he introduces the songs that helped to temper animals. It is noted that a very popular game in the 19th c. and in the beginning of the 20th c. was “Jautukai” [Little bulls], also called as “climbing to heaven”. According to the author, it is possible to recognize some pre-Christian images in the game: the tree of the world and pre-Christian attitude about life after the death. The author related the old customs with a popular game “Raganų mušimas” [Beating of witches]: the youth brought jackstraws which were called “whore witches”, put them next to a fence and threw sticks to them from the distance of 5–10 metres. If the jackstraw was beaten down with three hits, it was burned. Also, the author described a herds' game with stones; the game was accompanied by songs and related to magic. It is noted that the main enemy of herds was the cold and rain, therefore, there were many rituals that had to protect them from bad weather; also, the active games were played during bad weather. In autumn the popular games were counting until “elimination” and the group games “Kiaulikė”, “Palendra” and “Kerėplų mušimas”. Also, in autumn herds used to use “magic” in order to hasten the end of herding. It is noted that the article contains detailed descriptions about the order and the rules of the games.
