Summary / Abstract:

ENBroad and manysided were the activities of Vladas Nagevičius. He was born in Žemaitija (Samogitia), and all his archaeological excavations were conducted on this territory. In 1904 Nagevičius graduated from the Institute of Archaeology in St. Petersburg. In 1905 he first examined the burial ground in Kiauleikiai. In 1908-1914 Nagevičius excavated 10 graveyards of the 5th-15th centuries in Western Lithuania. After he had returned to Lithuania he took part in the activity of State Archaeological Commission. In 1921 Nagevičius organized a research expedition to examine the Pryšmančiai graveyard. During the summer an area of 3,539 sq m was excavated, and 89 graves, both cremation and inhumation, were found. In 1931-1932 Nagevičius examined the Apuolė hillfort. Two cross-sections of the rampart were made and the place of the gate was excavated. In 1933-1934 similar work was conducted in the Impiltis hillfort. Nagevičius employed many innovations, created two films about his investigations. The material of excavated hillforts was left unpublished. In 1935 Nagevičius published the results of his investigations in Pryšmančiai and other smaller graveyards. He delivered lectures on his excavations at the international congresses in Riga (1930), London (1932), and Oslo (1936).
