Summary / Abstract:

ENIn 2010, works of art from Hugo Scheu's collection accumulated at the Šilokarčema (currently Šilutė) manor and today stored at the Šilutė museum were exhibited outside this museum for the first time. They were demonstrated at an exhibition "Paintings from the Old Manor" held at LAM Pranas Domšaitis' Gallery. Their uniqueness and history immediately drew the attention of art researchers and lovers of the port city. The author of the publication provides an overview of the uniqueness, value and history of this collection, describes the merits of H. Scheu, a former Šilokarčema landowner, in forming this collection and the merits of other cultural figures in preserving it. After Lithuania regained independence, restoration of the collection of artworks that belonged to H. Scheu was started at LAM Pranas Gudynas' Restoration Centre. H. Scheu's manor has been restored in recent years. After the restoration is completed, all works of art stored there that have been preserved to date will be returned to their previous place where they decorated the interior of the manor during its heyday. Together with other unique exhibits they will represent the environment of the manor, which was home to H. Scheu, a prominent Šilutė city patron, a person well aware of the importance of Lithuanian culture and traditions, who dedicated a large part of his life to their preservation.
