Szurpiły - gród i jego nazwa: zdziejów granicy litewsko-krzyżackiej

LTStraipsnyje analizuojama Šiurpilio (lenk. Szurpiły; vietovė Jeleniavo vals. Palenkės vaivadijoje) gyvenvietės istorija ir pavadinimo kilmė. Aptariama gyvenvietės geografinė padėtis, istoriografijoje pasitaikantys jos lokalizavimo netikslumai. Dėl to istorinėje literatūroje vietovė priskiriama lietuviams, jotvingiams arba Kryžiuočių ordinui. Tyrimas grindžiamas rašytiniais, kalbotyros ir kartografijos šaltiniais. Pastarieji nėra išsamūs – vietovė nurodyta tik XVIII a. žemėlapyje. Šiurpiliuose vykdyti archeologiniai kasinėjimai (1981-1991 m. kasinėjo Jerzy Okulicz-Kazaryn, 2005 m. kasinėjimai atnaujinti), kurių duomenimis gyvenvietės atsiradimas datuojamas V a. arba VI a. pradžia, ji kelis kartus buvo perstatyta. Rašytiniuose šaltiniuose Šiurpilis pirmą kartą paminėtas 1396 m. (kaip Sunpilken, Supilken). XIV a. antroje pusėje prasidėjo ginčai dėl buvusių jotvingių žemių tarp ordino ir Lietuvos, todėl pasienyje esantis Šiurpilis minimas XIV-XV a. laiškuose ir sutartyse dėl sienų kaip vietovė priklausanti Lietuvai. Jo vietovardžio etimologiją tyrinėjo kalbininkai Kazys Būga, Knutas Olafas Falkas. Dabartinė forma – Szurpiły – sulenkinta. Vietovardis galėjo kilti iš lietuviškų žodžių „šiurpus“ ir „pilis“ arba iš su asmenvardžiu susijusio „Šurpilis“. 2005 m. atnaujinti archeologų darbai paskatins atkreipti dėmesį į ankstesnius šios vietovės tyrinėjimus, suteiks postūmį naujoms hipotezėms.

ENThe article analyses the history of Szurpily (Pol. Szurpiły; a place in Gmina Jeleniewo in the Podlaskie Voivodeship) and the origin of its name. A geographic situation of the settlement and inaccuracies of localisation in historiography are discussed. Therefore, in historic literature the settlement is attributed to Lithuanians, Yotvingians and the Teutonic Order. The research is based on written, linguistic and cartography sources. The latter are not comprehensive: the settlement is indicated only in a map of the 18th c. Some archaeological researches (in 1981–1991 Jerzy Okulicz-Kazaryn had some researches, in 2005 the research was renewed) took place in Szurpily. According to them, the settlement appeared in the 5th c. or the beginning of the 6th c. and was rebuilt a few times. In written sources Szurpily was mentioned for the first time in 1396 (as Sunpilken, Supilken). At the second half of the 14th c., there were some arguments between the Order and Lithuania regarding the former territory of Yotvingians. Therefore, in letters and contracts regarding the borders of the 14th–15th c., Szurpily which is at the frontier is mentioned as a settlement belonging to Lithuania. Its name's etymology was analysed by linguists Kazys Būga and Knutas Olafas Falkas. A current form 'Szurpiły' was Polonized. A place name could have originated from Lithuanian words “šiurpus” and “pilis” or from “Šurpilis” which is related to the place name. Archaeological works were renewed in 2005. They will attract attention to former researches of the place and will give a push to new hypotheses.
