ENThe changes in the political trends course the society interest in history. It can be referred both to the late 20's as well as to the 50's. „The red" themes of the slack period and Stalin's dogmas were rejected in the former and the latter cases, respectively. The historical changes in the 80's were evoked by the events in Poland, society's interest in history, „Perestroika" anxiety to fill up „the blank spaces in history". This resulted in publishing „half truth" books and articles. A typical example was collection under the title „A new approach to the Lithuanian history". In 1998 there appeared various memoirs, historical conferences intended to seek for the truth were held. At the same time exile historiography was republished. During 1988-1990 concepts of Lithuanian historians were either rejected or confirmed by exile historians. At the end of the decade the points of view of both Lithuanian and exile historians became closer: some concepts were supplemented by new facts the others by theoretical considerations and dating. Since the end of the last decade there has not been any difference in the concepts.In the conclusion one should mention about the lacking points in the science of Lithuanian history. At first it is necessary to point out the society's indifference towards history. Lithuanian historians failed to make use of big interest in history, which emerged earlier. Despite a number of serious publications the historians couldn't maintain the society's interest in history. The historians failed to make a positive attitude towards the science of history and the works of historians. This may be accounted for by the fact that the society is still very politicized and requires the historians to satisfy the needs and wishes of politicians. It is started that it is not bad if history serves ideology in case it is national ideology but it is wrong if it serves soviet ideology because it was bad in itself. The question arrives how the Lithuanian society understands the role of historians and the science of history. It is dangerous when history is used for the sake of sensations. It becomes a tendency to look for sensations in history without a deeper insight into real facts.
