Summary / Abstract:

ENThe main question addressed in this article is the relationship of Lithuania's international law scholarship and the development of the Lithuanian nation State from 1918 to 1940. In order to better understand Lithuanian international law scholarship of this period, an attempt is made to trace its origin in the historical tradition of Lithuanian legal thinking. On the basis of the research into the period of 1918 to 1940 further questions are raised. First, did a distinct Lithuanian tradition of international law scholarship survive or even continue developing when Lithuania's statehood was suppressed, i.e. during the Soviet occupation? Second, on the basis of these two periods (1918-1940 and 1940-1990), how can the present state of the Lithuanian international law scholarship and teaching be estimated and what expectations can we reasonably have for the future?.
