Legenda o jednodniowym królu Saulu Wahlu - jej geneza oraz znaczenie dla funkcjonowania Żydów w społeczeństwie Wielkiego Księstwa Litewskiego

Savo trumpu valdymo laikotarpiu jam pavyko priimti keletą žydams palankių įstatymų. Straipsnyje analizuojama legenda apie žydų kilmės Abiejų Tautų Respublikos karalių, perteikiama jo svarba žydų diasporai Lietuvoje ir bandoma paaiškinti, kodėl Saulius Judas Katzellenbogenas buvo pasirinktas karališko mito herojumi. Straipsnio autorė Maria Cieśla sutelkė dėmesį ties šiais svarbiausiais aspektais: legendos kilmės laikotarpis; jos atsiradimą lėmusių faktorių analizė; legendoje išsaugotas tuometinių santykių tarp krikščionių ir žydų paveikslas. Remiantis legendos turinio analize, ji atsirado paskutiniais XVII amžiaus dešimtmečiais arba XVIII amžiaus pradžioje. Legendos atsiradimą nulėmusiais faktoriais įvardijamas žydų situacijos blogėjimas, jų asimiliacijos augimas ir žydų bendruomenių elito funkcionavimo pokyčiai. Kaip rodo analizė, žydų kolektyvinė atmintis išsaugojo svarbiausius XVI amžiaus pabaigos įvykius ir Mikalojaus Kristupo Radvilos Našlaitėlio personą. Be to, legendos kūrėjai turėjo gerą supratimą apie senosios Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybės politinę sistemą. Legenda apie Saulių Valą turi avantiūristinės literatūros požymių.

ENThe purpose of the article is to evoke a historical personage of Saul Judah Wahl - famous for his wisdom the king's mercantile factor, royal toll and duty lease-holder who, as the Jewish legend has it, was elected king of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth for one single day after the death of King Stephen Batory. During his short "reign" he was able to pass numerous laws favourable for Jews. The subject of the article is an analysis of the legend of "the Jewish King" of the Com monwealth, presentation of its importance for the Jewish Diaspora in Lithuania and an attempt to explain why Saul Judah Katzcllenbogen was chosen to be the hero of the royal myth. The Author focused her attention on the following issues: the time of the legend's origins; an analysis of factors conducive to its emergence; and the picture of the Christian-Jewish relations preserved in the legend. The analysis of the legend's content indicates that it arose in the last decades of the 17th century or in the early 18th century. The factors determining its emergence include worsening situation of' Jews, their growing assimilation and changes in the functioning of the elites within the Jewish Community. As the analysis demonstrates, Jewish collective memory has preserved the most important events of the end of the 16th century, together with the person of Mikołaj Krzysztof "The Orphan" Radziwiłł. The Jewish originators of the legend has also a good grasp of the political system of the old Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. The legend of Saul Wahl bears a striking similarity to picaresque literature.
