(In)visibilities of race, ethnicity and gender - Baltic contexts

LTStraipsnyje, pasitelkiant pavyzdžius iš latvių ir lietuvių spaudos, skelbimų, komercinės ir politinės reklamos bei įvairių autorių ištarmių apmąstomi rasinės diskriminacijos reiškiniai ir skirtingos jų formos postsovietinėse Pabaltijo valstybėse. Straipsnio autorės teigimu, kultūrinis nacionalizmas negali būti atskirtas nuo tokių jo politinių ir ideologinių apraiškų, kurios atveria kelius kraštutiniam rasiniam nacionalizmui tiek populiarioje galvosenoje ir prietaruose, tiek praktinėje veikloje. Pasirinkti pavyzdžiai simptomiškai rodo artimą ryšį tarp postsovietinio kultūrinio nacionalizmo ir paskesnio įsišaknijusio galvojimo apie būtinybę saugoti tautinę vienybę nuo ateities įsibrovėlių iš Rytų ir Vakarų. Straipsnyje aptartuose pramoginiuose ar politiniuose skelbimuose eksploatuojamas juodaodžio vyro paveikslas demonstruoja rasistinius prievartautojo, seksualiai išnaudojamo kūno, barbaro vaizdinius, kurie pasitelkiami siekiant paveikiai pranešti apie migracijos, didėjančio nusikalstamumo ir kitas grėsmes. Dar vienas rasistinės ideologijos aspektas apima paplitusią šeimos įvaizdį formuojančią retoriką, kuria pasisakoma prieš mišrias santuokas, tokiu būdu keliant etninę ir rasinę savivertę ir, tuo pačiu, skiepijant tautinio „grynumo“ idėją.

ENThe article, using examples from the Latvian and Lithuanian press, advertisements, commercial and political advertising as well as assertions of various authors, reflects on phenomena of racial discrimination and their different forms in the post-Soviet Baltic States. According to the article’s author, cultural nationalism cannot be separated from its political and ideological manifestations opening paths to extreme racial nationalism in both popular way of thinking and prejudices and practical activities. Selected examples symptomatically show a close relationship between post-Soviet cultural nationalism and subsequent deep-rooted thinking about the necessity to preserve national unity against future invaders from the East and the West. The image of the black man exploited in entertainment or political advertisements discussed in the article demonstrates racist images of a rapist, sexually abused body, barbarian which are used to effectively inform about threats of migration, rising crime, etc. One more aspect of the racist ideology covers widespread rhetoric forming the image of family used to oppose miscegenation, thereby increasing ethnic and racial self-esteem and, at the same time, inculcating the idea of national “purity”.
