Summary / Abstract:

ENPreparations for the Uprising in the vicinities of Žemaičių Kalvarija as well as all over Lithuania started in 1861. One of the most active participants in antitsarist actions was a Dominican whose name was Pilypas Mokržeckis. At the end of 1862, the organizing committee was set up at the Gegrėnai manor. Antanas Venslauskis, lord of the manor, became the chairman of the committee and Leonardas Stacikas was the secretary. The first blows by the rebels were struck in April, 1863. The leader in the rebellion was Severinas Grosas. In the summer of that year, a number of successful attacks were made by the troops of rebels led by Povilas Simkevičius and Robertas Krasauskas. A decisive battle of rebels with the tsarist army took place on August 30, 1863. Students of the Žemaičių Seminary took an active part as volunteers in the battle. The Uprising was cruelly suppressed. A great number of rebels were sentenced to death, others were exiled to Siberia. Among the exiles there were P. Mokržeckis, A. Venslauskis and others. Another place of exile for the most active participants, monks, became the Žemaičių Kalvarija Monastery until it was closed in 1889.
