Investigation of the acquisition of the English vocabulary from the point of view of linguostatistics

LTKalbos mokymosi praktikoje nepakankamai dažnai atsižvelgiama į žodžio dažnumo kriterijų. Šiaulių universitete atliktas psicholingvistinis eksperimentas, kurio tikslas buvo moksliškai pagrįsti žodyno diferenciaciją remiantis žodžių dažnumu mokant užsienio kalbos. Pasyvaus vertimo užduočiai buvo sudaryti du testai, vienas aukšto ir kitas žemo žodyno dažnio. Kiekviename teste buvo po 100 žodžių, kurie pagal kalbos dalis buvo pasiskirstę taip: 35 daiktavardžiai, 35 veiksmažodžiai, 20 būdvardžių, 10 prieveiksmių. Tyrimo dalyviai buvo 100 pirmo kursų studentų, suskirstyti į 2 grupes po 50 žmonių. Tyrimu nustatyta, kad dažnai vartojami žodžiai įsisavinami lengviau. Teisingi studentų, besimokančių anglų filologijos, atsakymai į aukšto dažnio žodyno testą buvo vidutiniškai 99,32 proc. teisingų atsakymų, žemo dažnio -10,93 proc. Kitų specialybių studentų, kuriems anglų kalba buvo tik papildomas dalykas, atsakymai buvo atitinkamai 95,41 proc. ir 5,5 proc. Daugiausia studentų abiejose grupėse teisingai išvertė daiktavardžius: būsimi anglų kalbos specialistai 99,66 proc. išvertė teigingai aukšto dažnio žodyno užduotyje, ir 6,4 proc. žemo dažnio žodyno užduotyje. Nespecialistų rezultatai buvo šiek tiek žemesni, t.y. 98,06 proc. ir 3,66 proc. teisingų atsakymų atitinkamai. Apibendrinant gautus rezultatus galima teigti, kad aukšto dažnio žodynas (daugiausia konkrečios reikšmės) yra dažniausiai verčiamas teisingai, o žemo dažnio (dažniau abstraktus) -daug sunkiau.Reikšminiai žodžiai: žodžių dažnumas; žodynas; Lingvostatistika; word frequency; Vocabulary; Linguostatistics.

ENIn the language learning practice the attention is not sufficiently frequently drawn to the criterion of frequency of words. The psycholinguistic experiment was performed at the University of Šiauliai with the aim of scientific substantiation of the differentiation of the vocabulary referring to the frequency of words when teaching a foreign language. Two tests were formed for the task of passive evaluation, one of a high and the other of a low vocabulary frequency. Each test contained 100 words: 35 nouns, 35 verbs, 20 adjectives and 10 adverbs. The participants of the research were 100 first-year students, divided into two groups of 50 persons each. During the study it was established that more frequently used words are more easily assimilated. On the average 99.32 per cent of the answers to the high frequency vocabulary test by the students, studying English philology, were correct, 10.93 per cent of the answers to the low frequency vocabulary test were correct. The answers, presented by students of other profiles, to whom the English language was a supplementary subject, were correspondingly 95.41 per cent and 5.5 per cent. Most students in both groups provided correct translations of nouns: the future English language specialists correctly translated 99.66 per cent of the task of high frequency vocabulary and 6.4 per cent – in the task of low frequency vocabulary. The results of non-specialists were to a certain extent lower, i. e. 98.06 per cent and 3.66 per cent of correct answers correspondingly. Summarizing the obtained results it can be stated that the high frequency vocabulary (often specific meanings) is most frequently translated correctly and the low frequency vocabulary (often abstract meanings) is translated with much more difficulties.
