ENThe review presents the book of memoirs of Merkelis Račkauskas (1885–1968) and extensively and reasonably describes the context for the appearance of Račkauskas’ memoirs. One of the most important issues raised in the review is actualisation of the aspect of national identity in the memoirs and memory reception. The reviewer notes that Račkauskas reconstructs memory on several levels: personal experience is transferred both directly from generation to generation and through the author’s reflection of the mentality typical of society of his living period, perception of national identity, religious and political views, value attitudes, which clearly influence the author’s personality development. The level of personal relations is revealed through retelling of family stories with inserts of the elements from own imagination (about parents’ origin, grandparents’ relations with lords, and love dramas). On the social-cultural level there appear events, significant for the nation and culture, documents and the phenomena typical of a certain epoch, recorded in memory. The reviewer notes that the historical-cultural value of this impressive memoiristic work raises no doubts. “Notes” by Račkauskas might be read as the text reflecting the 19th c. culture: the author’s personality moves to the background, giving way to the analysis of the then environment, society characteristics, social, political and cultural phenomena. Račkauskas retains the balance of historical-cultural value, authenticity and artistry, thus expanding the circle of potential readers.
