LTStraipsnyje aptariama išeivijos kolekcininko Aleksandro Mykolo Račkaus kolekcijos formavimosi istorija ir jos perdavimo Lietuvai prieš II pasaulinį karą peripetijos, pristatomas unikalus, vienas didžiausių Baltijos šalyse numizmatikos rinkinys, saugomas Nacionaliniame M. K. Čiurlionio muziejuje Kaune. A. M. Račkaus rinkinys yra didžiausia lietuvių numizmatikos kolekcija pasaulyje – daugiau kaip 1700 vnt. (pažymėtina, kad Krokuvoje saugomos E. Hutten-Czapskio numizmatikos kolekcijos lietuvišką dalį sudaro 1263 vnt.). A. M. Račkaus numizmatiniai rinkiniai sudaro Nacionalinio M. K. Čiurlionio dailės muziejaus numizmatikos rinkinių pagrindą. Tikslaus A. M. Račkaus atvežtų monetų skaičiaus negalima įvardyti, nes dalis ne tokių vertingų monetų dar ir šiuo metu nebaigta tvarkyti, o mažesnę numizmatinę vertę turinčių monetų skaičiaus nepateikė ir pats A. M. Račkus. Numizmatikos skyriaus darbuotojai pradeda tyrinėti milžinišką A. M. Račkaus palikimą. S. Sajauskas suregistravo A. M. Račkaus parvežtas numizmatikos knygas, kurios saugomos muziejuje. Pradedama tyrinėti Tolimųjų Rytų kolekcija. Ją puošia retas, vienas iš pirmųjų pasaulyje Mingų dinastijos (Kinija) XV a. popierinis pinigas – 1 kvanas. Daugybė Numizmatikos skyriuje saugomų aukcionų katalogų su pažymėtomis A. M. Račkų dominusiomis pozicijomis, jo korespondencija ir išlikę pirmieji eksponatų vokeliai gali padėti atrasti dar neatskleistus arba seniai užmirštus lobius.
ENThe article deals with Alexander M. Račkus' legacy, stored at the Dept. of Numismatics, M.K. Čiurlionis National Art Museum. The collection had been brought on the occasion of the 1st Congress of World Lithuanians, held in Kaunas on August 11-17, 1935. The exhibition was an important event in Lithuania's cultural life and was reported in Lithuanian press of the time. M. Račkus began to collect items being a student of St. Laurent College in Montreal, Canada, in 1913 when he worked as a restorer at the local museum. Documentation and press cuttings preserved at the Dept. of Numismatics show that in the period of 1935-1936 the Ministry of Education of Lithuania was given collections of numismatics by A.M. Račkus (40000 items), materials related to Lithuanian culture, accumulated at the museum of the Lithuanian Society of Numismatics and History (Chicago, USA), gatherings of natural history and the library containing books on numismatics, science, and Lithuanian literature. The Ministry of Education recouped A.M. Račkus 100000 Litas, which was merely for the numismatic collection. The archival documents of the Dept. of Numismatics confirm, that the Ministry of Education transferred all collections to the Dept. of History of Vytautas the Great Museum of Culture in Kaunas (founded in 1936). A.M. Račkus himself was appointed head of the Dept. The collections were revised, and items of natural history and books, that did not meet the standards of the Museum (3907 items), were given to various educational institutions.A.M. Račkus' idea of how to maintain and display the collections differed from that of the museum's management, so he quitted his job in 1938. A. M. Rackus continued collecting lituanistic materials, that came to museum's possesions after the Soviet occupation, when A.M. Račkus had left less valuable items at his estate. The total collection, trans-ferred to the Museum at that period comprised 3276 items. The Dept. of Numismatics also stores personal items - stamps, tools, decorations, that belonged to A.M. Račkus. A.M. Račkus was remebered again in 1993. Celebrating his centenary, a large exhibition of his collections and a conference devoted to his work was held. Treasures of Lithuanian numismatics, 1700 coins (there are some difficulties to present the exact number of items, as some of the coins are fakes) accumulated by A.M. Račkus remain the largest personal collection of Lithuanian numismatics. His gatherings have been studied by museum proffesionals J. Abdulskytė, S. Sajauskas, and R. Verkelienė. The Dept. of Numismatics has in its possessions 2780 money items of primitive nations, 25 - rare medals by V. D. Brenner, 4022 - silver coins of different nations, 91 - golden coins and medals, and a collection of Chinese coins, containing over 2100 items. Collections donated to Lithuania by A.M. Račkus - a unique source for museum professionals and experts in numismatics. Documentation stored at the Dept. of Numismatics and the Archives is very helpful while studying A.M. Račkus' gatherings that are waiting for their turn among the numerous exhibits of the Dept.
