Some supplementary data to Carl von Schmith's life and activities

LTCarlas von Schmithas (apie 1795–1876) yra gerai žinomas archeologijos mokslo pasaulyje. Ypač reikšmingas jo parengtas albumas "Necrolithuanica". Straipsnyje aptariami šio asmens gyvenimo ir veiklos bruožai, remiantis Literatūros muziejuje Tartu (Estija) saugomais kai kuriais jo rankraščiais. Nėra žinomi tikslūs kolekcininko gimimo duomenys, neatmestina, kad galėjo gimti Talino burgerių šeimoje. 1831–1835 m. C. von Schmithas gyveno Taline, po to išvyko į Lietuvą. 1846 m. tapo Estijos Literatų draugijos nariu korespondentu. Persikėlė į Rygą, galiausiai vėl grįžo Lietuvą ir gyveno Kaune iki pat savo mirties. Dar gyvendamas Taline pradėjo domėtis Prancūzijos, Rusijos ir antikinėmis monetomis, jas registravo ir aprašinėjo. Daugiausiai surinko rusiškų, Livonijos ir antikinių monetų. 1852 m. buvo priverstas rusiškas monetas parduoti Sankt Peterburgui. 1855 m. pasiūlė Tartu universitetui savo sukauptą gintaro kolekciją, bijodamas, kad ji gali būti jėga išgabenta į Kijevą. Tačiau vis dar pats saugojo livonietiškas monetas, kurių tolesnis likimas nėra žinomas. Gyvenant Rygoje gimė mintis sudaryti Kuršo ir Livonijos monetų katalogą. Galutinis sumanymo rezultatas – trijų tomų baltų monetų katalogas. Pirmasis tomas, skirtas Kuršo monetoms, buvo baigtas Rygoje 1854–1855 m. Dviejų dalių Livinijos monetoms skirtas tomas buvo parengtas 1857–1858 m. Paskutinysis tomas skirtas laisvajam Rygos miestui ir Švedijos bei Lenkijos valdovų periodui Livonijoje. Katalogo iliustracijas piešė C. von Schmithas. Kataloge pasitaiko ir klaidų. Pavyzdžiui, kolekcininkas buvo įsitikinęs, kad visos viduramžių laikotarpio Livonijos didelės monetos buvo šilingai, o mažos – artigai.

ENCarl Von Schmith (~1795-1876) is well-known in the world of archaeology. His album, "Necrolithuanica", is especially significant. The article discusses the features of this person's life and activities, based on some of his manuscripts stored in the Estonian Literary Museum in Tartu. The exact date of birth of the collector is not known but it is possible that he could have been born in the family of the Tallinn Berger family. From 1831 to 1835, Schmith lived in Tallinn, then went to Lithuania. In 1846, he became the correspondent of the Estonian Literary Society. Then he moved to Riga but eventually returned to Lithuania and lived in Kaunas for the rest of his life. While living in Tallinn, he began to take interest in French, Russian and antique coins. He would register them as well as provide a description. Russian, Livonian and antique coins made up the biggest part of his collection. In 1852, was forced to sell Russian coins to St. Petersburg. In 1855, he offered the University of Tartu his accumulated amber collection, as he feared that it could be taken by force to Kiev. However, he himself still kept the Livonian coins. Their further fate is not known. When he was living in Riga, the idea of creating a catalogue of Curonian and Livonian coins was born. The final result of the project is a three volume catalogue of white coins. The first volume, dedicated to the Curonian coins, was completed in Riga in the period of 1854-1855. The volume of two parts dedicated to Livonian coins was prepared in the period of 1857-1858. The last volume is dedicated to the free city of Riga and the period of the Swedish and Polish rulers in Livonia. The illustrations of the catalogue were drawn by Schmith himself. There are errors in the catalogue. For example, the collector was convinced that all medieval Livonian coins were shillings and the small ones were artigs.
