ENResults of recent archaeological research have disavowed the prevailing belief that wooden castles built on Lithuanian hill forts of the later period served as residences of landlords as well as administrative and political centres of separate territories. These were primarily defensive strongholds which appeared in the early 2nd millennium as a response to foreign military threat. They acquired residential and administrative functions only after the emergence of the state, when its internal organization was emerging.
