The Image of Lithuania and its migrants in American literature

LT2001 metais išleisto romano The Corrections autorius Jonathan Franzen sulaukė Lietuvos protestų dėl sufabrikuoto Lietuvos vaizdavimo. Nors tokia hiperbolizuota reakcija į grožinį kūrinį gali stebinti amerikiečių autorių, toks aktyvus Lietuvos dėmesys savo įvaizdžiui yra naujas ir sveikintinas. Manau, kad Franzen pasirinko Lietuvą reprezentuoti Rytų Europą dėl Lietuvoje netikėtai atsiskleidusio pavėluoto nacionalizmo. 1990-aisiais, kai Vakarų akademinė visuomenė buvo saugiai nurašiusi nacionalizmo reiškinį į istorijos archyvą, Lietuva pasirodė Vakarų pasauliui kaip naujų nacionalinio išsivadavimo judėjimų lyderė. Neprognozuotas nacionalizmo proveržis 21-ojo amžiaus išvakarėse verčia Vakarus iš naujo atrasti Rytų ir Centrinės Europos tautas, iki tol patogiai paslėptas už geležinės uždangos. Lietuvos atminties ištrynimą amerikiečių sąmonėje dar lėmė lietuviško identiteto sutapatinimas su slaviškuoju JAV istoriografijoje bei akademinėje literatūroje bei pačių lietuvių tylus susitaikymas su Lietuvos ir lietuvių klaidingu reprezentavimu pasaulyje. Todėl augantis pasaulio lietuvių dėmesys savo įvaizdžiui Vakaruose padeda pasauliui iš naujo atrasti užmirštą Lietuvą. ENJonathan Franzen, author of the novel The Corrections that was published in 2001, received objections from the Lithuanian side due to a fabricated portrayal of Lithuania. Though such a hyperbolical reaction to a work of fiction would surprise an American writer, such active attention of Lithuania to its image is innovative and welcome. In my opinion, Franzen chose Lithuania to represent Eastern Europe due to overdue nationalism that has revealed itself unexpectedly in Lithuania. In 1990, when the Western academic community discarded safely the phenomenon of nationalism to the archives of history, Lithuania showed itself to the Western world as the leader of the new national liberation movements. The unforecasted sally of nationalism on the threshold of the 21st century made the West discover anew Eastern and Central European nations that had been securely hidden behind the iron curtain. The distinction of Lithuanian memories in American consciousness was also determined by the association of Lithuanian identity with Slavic identity in American historiography and academic literature as well as the calm resignation of Lithuanians themselves with the mistaken representation of Lithuania and Lithuanians in the world. Therefore, the growing attention of Lithuanians worldwide to their own image in the West helps the world discover anew Lithuania, which had been forgotten.
