Mathias Niendorf: Das Großfürstentum Litauen. Studien zur Nationsbildung in der Frühen Neuzeit (1569-1795)
LTRecenzijoje aptariama Mathiaso Niendorfo knyga „Das Großfürstentum Litauen“. Pažymima, kad ši knyga yra istorinės sintezės bandymas. Teigiama, kad vokiečių istorikas į Lietuvos Didžiąją Kunigaikštystę žvelgia kaip į Europos regioną, kuriame vykę procesai lygintini su tuo pačiu metu vykusiais Europos istorijos reiškiniais. Pažymima, kad pirmajame skyriuje apžvelgiama LDK istorija nuo Krėvos akto iki 1795 m. paskutiniojo Abiejų Tautų Respublikos padalijimo, ypatingą dėmesį kreipiant į ikimoderno tautos formavimosi tendencijas. Kituose skyriuose analizuojamos tautinę integraciją charakteringai atspindinčios temos: kilmės ir valdovų mitai, skirtingų tautų sugyvenimas ir tarpusavio pažinimas, kalbos faktorius, konfesijų įvairovė, Švč. Mergelės Marijos ir šventųjų kultai. Pažymima, kad autorius išsamiai aptaria romėniškos lietuvių kilmės teorijos ir kitų istorinių įvaizdžių reikšmę politinės savimonės raidai. Aptariant atskiros tautinės savimonės egzistavimą Lietuvos Didžiojoje Kunigaikštystėje XVI-XVIII a. , pabrėžiama, kad tokios savimonės išsaugojimas ir perdavimas vyko nepalankiomis sąlygomis: išmirus iš Lietuvos kilusiai Jogailaičių dinastijai, renkami valdovai negalėjo vaidinti integruojančio vaidmens. Recenzentas kvestionuoja Žemaitijos istorijos traktuotę. Pažymima, kad bent jau nuo Vytauto ir Kazimiero Jogailaičio laikų ji buvo integrali Lietuvos dalis. Recenzentas pažymi gerai apgalvotą istoriografinių teiginių ir vokiškų istorinių terminų parinkimą ir itin didelį bibliografinį sąrašą, liudijantį gilų istoriografinių tradicijų suvokimą.
ENThe review concerns the book “Das Großfürstentum Litauen” [The Grand Duchy of Lithuania] by Mathias Niendorf. The author notes that this book is an attempt of historical synthesis. It is stated that the German historian sees the Grand Duchy of Lithuania as a European region whose processes could be compared with the European history phenomena that took place at that time. The first chapter overviews the GDL history from the Union of Krewo until the last partition of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in 1795, with a particular regard to the pre-modern tendencies of the formation of the nation. The other chapters analyse the issues that characteristically reflect national integration: the myths of origin and rulers, getting on of different nations and their mutual cognition, the factor of language, the diversity of confessions, and the cults of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the saints. The author extensively discusses the significance of the theory of the Roman origin of Lithuanians and other historical images for the development of political self-awareness. The discussion of existence of separate national self-awareness in GDL in the 16th–18th c. emphasises that preservation and transfer of this self-awareness took place under unfavourable conditions: after the Jagiellonian dynasty of Lithuanian descent died out, the elected rulers could not play an integrating role. The reviewer questions the approach to the history of Samogitia. It is noted that at least since the times of ruling by Vytautas and Kazimieras Jogailaitis it was an integral part of Lithuania. The reviewer notes a well-thought-out selection of historiographical statements and German historical terms and a particularly long bibliographical list evidencing deep understanding of historiographical traditions.
