Antrasis kryžiaus žygis ir jo kontekstai : recenzija

LTStraipsnis yra Jonathano Phillipso studijos „The Second Crusade. Extending the frontiers of Christendom“ (New Haven-London: Yale university press, 2007) recenzija. Knygos autorius bando perteikti naują požiūrį į kryžiaus karų istoriją. Knygą sudaro keturiolika skyrių ir du priedai. Viename priede į anglų kalbą išversta garsioji popiežiaus Eugenijaus III bulė „Quantum praedescessores“, kitame – kronikos, pasakojančios apie Edesos žlugimą, ištraukos. Knygos pradžioje pateiktas to meto Europos žemėlapis, santrumpų sąrašas. Kiti žemėlapiai pateikti pačiame tekste. Knygoje esama keleto įklijų. Jose skaitytojas gali išvysti pačius pagrindinius Antrojo kryžiaus žygio dalyvius arba propaguotojus. Knygos gale, kaip jau įprasta, pateikiamos nuorodos, literatūros sąrašas bei asmenvardžių, vietovardžių ir pagrindinių sąvokų rodyklės. J. Phillipsas jau yra parašęs ne vieną knygą, skirtą kryžiaus karų problematikai, o Londono universitete skaito keletą dalykų, skirtų būtent šiai problematikai. J. Phillipso studija sudaro galimybę susipažinti su kryžiaus karų poslinkio į Baltijos regioną ištakomis, nors tiesioginio ryšio tarp kryžiaus karų ir baltų genčių christianizacijos arba vėlesnio nukariavimo joje ir nėra. ENThe paper is a review of Jonathan Phillips’s study “The Second Crusade. Extending the Frontiers of Christendom” (New Haven-London: Yale University Press, 2007). The author of the book tries to convey a new approach to the history of the Crusades. The book consists of fourteen chapters and two appendixes. One appendix contains the translation of the famous “Quantum praedescessores”, a papal bull by Pope Eugenius III, into English; the other appendix gives extracts from the chronicle on the fall of the County of Edessa. The book starts with the contemporary European map and the list of abbreviations. Other maps are given throughout the text. The book has several insets. They acquaint the reader with the main participants or advocates of the Second Crusade. The end of the book, as usual, presents references, bibliography and the indexes of proper names, place names and key concepts. Phillips has written a number of books on the Crusades and has been delivering several subjects on related issues at the University of London. The study by Phillips provides an opportunity to become acquainted with the causes of the turn of the Crusades to the Baltic region, although it does not give a direct relationship between the Crusades and Christendom of the Baltic tribes or their subsequent conquering. On the other hand, by relating the events that happened at the same time yet in different regions we may trace those deep processes that subsequently, from the end of the 12th c., determined the existence of the Baltic tribes, and finally the State of Lithuania, and the nature of Christendom and the Crusades.
