ENThe concern over the symbolic field of power reveals itself in memoirs, travel sketches and letters written by Baltušis as a consciously constructed image of the self-sacrificing hero, which had to mummify the writer‘s body of glory.Communist party officials actively supported image of Baltušis, his charismaof an influential party agent and a talented writer who knew how to meet the needs of people. Baltušis himself shaped this image by the means of agitative activism, complemented in his memoirs with more subtle strategies of persuasion such as disclosing of secrets, and conspiracy with the reader. Even if what really formed the subject of the memoirs were ideological phantasms, they did not obscure the aesthetic concerns reflected in his works. He projects his lyrical memoirs into the mythologized idyl. The writer’s journey to the USA , which at that time was assumed to be the center of social, military. and economic power of the enemy camp, may be read as an antipode to the utopia of The Tale of Juza. What is common to the tale and travel sketches is a mythologeme of the guide and savior of the nation. The dazzling brilliance of metropolis reflected in the tale corresponds to the secret radiance of the nature and its connoisseur. The tale’s idyl and the image of Juza as a demiurge and guide, and savior of the people shows that Baltušis attempted to transfer attention from the external body of the ruler and the image of the writer-agitator, and the writer-spy to his secret genetic link with the self-sacrificed divinity.What becomes ambivalent shelter for Baltušis, which prevents from the open glorification of the system, is the ethnically marked emblem of utopia, the sacralisation of the man and work in the nature, the drama of the medicine-man and the guardian of the people. As Baltušis tried to escape the tension prevailing in the social sphere, he found the archetypal equivalent to socialism in the idyl of the tale. [From the publication]
