Summary / Abstract:

ENHypothesis proposed in this article is that in the first decade of the restored independence the new phase of the Lithuanian novel history began, and it marked the transition from the suffering syndrome, and exhausted traditions that came to an end to the cycle of intensified dynamic processes. The reference is made to the conceptual Jury Lotman’s presuppositions of the dynamic model of the semiotic structures, according to which in the culture there always proceed exchanges between the periphery and nucleus, systemic and non-systemic elements, unambiguity and ambiguity. The main criteria for recognition of the new literature centers - which are being formed - are assumed to be metafictionality, playfulness and the death of the plot. Disappearance of the narrator-authority, position of homo ludens, and programmic disposition for the humor - which are the most distinct characteristics of the literature that seeks for wholeness - are found in the novels of Jurgis Kunčinas and Ramūnas Kasparavičius. What is allocated to the exhausted tradition of the literature is the creative work of Ričardas Gavelis of the period of 1990s.The novels by Vytautas Bubnys and Renata Šerelytė which attempt to connect realistic conventions and tradition of the lyric prose with the elements of postmodern literature are valued as objects of high inner informativeness. The exhaustion of the suffering noticeable in the autobiographical and essay texts is considered to be the analogy of disappearance of the plot. The structure of the few levels created playing with the differences of textual levels which had been encoded in different ways is assumed to be the most perspective possibility of the Lithuanian novel, and it is a pity that it has not been exploited so far. Many hopes are related to the creation synthesizing traditions of Danutė Kalinauskaitė, which establishes the attitude of trust and rationality towards the suffering, and which suggested the new existential formula Nescio, ergo sum (I don’t know, therefore I am).
