Summary / Abstract:

ENAt the end of the 19th century we can notice a certain renaissance of the theme of Faust in the Baltic and Slavic literature. Faust appeared in Lithuania and Latvia in different ways: Lithuanian readers got acquainted with Faust thanks to Polish literature - from the translation of the novel "Pan Tvardovskij" by J. I. Krasevskij. Goethe's "Faust" has been translated into the Latvian language three times (translators Rainis, J. Masens, V. Bisenieks), into the Lithuanian language - four times (translators A. Valaitis, A. Churginas, L. Svedas, A. A. Jonynas). The first translation of "Faust" into Latvian became a cultural event; in contrast, the first translation of "Faust" into Lithuanian in 1934 was very unsuccessful. Only in 1960 a translation of "Faust" into Lithuanian was carried out that was acceptable by the today's standards of translation. Comparing different fragments of "Faust" rendered by Latvian and Lithuanian translators of different times, we can examine different translation schools.
