ENThis monograph is dedicated for the memory of Antanas Stancevičius (1920-2007), an outstanding Lithuanian agronomist, botanist, pioneer in the field of geobotanical research in the country, researcher of agricultural systems and crop rotations, public figure, professor at the Lithuanian Academy (University) of Agriculture, educator of specialists of agriculture and scientific staff, author of abundant scientific heritage. Professor Antanas Stancevičius was born on the 8th of January, 1920 in Lomiai village, Batakiai district, Taurage region. In 1927-1929 he attended Raseiniai Primary School and in 1938 he was issued Raseiniai State Gymnasium Certificate (currently "Kalno" Secondary School). In 1938-1942 he took a full course of lectures at the Faculty of Agronomy, Agricultural Academy (in Dotnuva). In 1943 he was granted the name of Certified Agronomist after defending his diploma thesis "Weeds in Winter Crop in Autumn" where he generalized the research data collected over 1942-1943 working as an assistant at Weed Department of Plant Protection Station (Dotnuva). Antanas Stancevičius worked as an agronomist in the Centre of Tobacco Growing in 1943-1944 and Aniškis Soviet Farm in Alytus region in 1944-1946, there he became Director of the Farm. [...] Professor was a member of the Lithuanian Scientific Board in 1991-1996 and from 2003 till death, member of the Scientific Board of Lithuanian Agriculture, member of the Social Experts' Board of Lithuanian Agriculture and Forestry from 2001 till death.After gaining the pedagogical title of associate professor he became member of the scientific boards at the Lithuanian Academy (University) of Agriculture, the Lithuanian Institute of Agriculture and the Institute of Botany. Professor Antanas Stancevičius distinguished himself as a socially active figure. He was the head of the re-established Chamber of Agriculture in 1991-2000 and Head of Honour from 2000. The positions occupied by Antanas Stancevičius could be listed as follows: member of editoriai staff of the magazine "Mūsų gamta" ("Our Nature") (1977-1990), member ofeditorial staff of the magazine "Žemės ūkis" ("Agriculture") (1991-2000), head of the board of the Lithuanian Society of Herbology (1999-2007), head of the board of the Lithuanian Association of Agronomy, member of the Lithuanian Society of Botany, head of the board of the Agricultural Cooperatives Association "Kooperacijos kelias" ("Road of Cooperation"), member of the LUA professors' club "Scientia", member of the public organization "Sambūris Patirtis" ("Assembly Experience"), member of honour of the Lithuanian Nationals Union, head of the Court of Honour, member of the European Weed Research Society (EWRS), member of the International Soil Tillage Research Organization (ISTRO), actual member of the International Informatization Academy. Professor Antanas Stancevičius was awarded for excellent work and active participation in public life. […].
