ENThe book is a historical study about the Lithuanian teachers, who worked during the period of independence (1918-1940). The study is partly a biographical work, covering the lives of such teachers as Povilas Kazėnas, Ona Kuodytė-Kazėnienė, Antanas Dlugauskas, etc, who worked not only in schools, but also were active in various spheres of the social life in Lithuania. The teachers were the mentors in su ch organizations as Ateitininkai or Lithuanian Scouts' League. The authors of the book try to get a glimpse of how various social, political and historical conditions affected the lives of teachers and their work. The study has another significant task: to reveal the lives of teachers during the years of the Soviet occupation, when the intellectual elite of Lithuania was exterminated or deported to Siberia. Therefore, the authors, Nijolė Dlugauskaitė and Kęstutis Kasparas, take this challenging task on two leveis: the biographical and the historical, the latter is a scrupulous task, since the authors have worked in the KGB archives to get all the facts about the work of the teachers under the Soviet administration. The study provides not only factual information, but also photographs, documents, etc. At the end of each section, a reader will find a list of references.
