Lietuvos kariuomenė svetimšalių akimis XVI - XVII a
LTAbsoliuti dauguma visų italų ir prancūzų, buvusių ATR XVI–XVII a., vyko čia su kokia nors užduotimi ar konkrečiu tikslu. Savo malonumui keliavusiųjų beveik nėra. Prancūziškų šaltinių daugumą sudaro diplomatų, kariuomenės samdinių, Lenkijos karaliaus dvariškių, keleto keliautojų atsiminimai. Daugiausia prancūziškų Lenkijos–Lietuvos aprašymų yra iš XVII a. antros pusės, kai politiniai ir kultūriniai santykiai tarp Lenkijos–Lietuvos ir Prancūzijos ypač suaktyvėjo. Didžiąją dalį itališkos medžiagos sudaro Venecijos ambasadorių ir popiežiaus nuncijų reliacijos bei korespondencija. Daugiausia jų yra iš XVI a. antros pusės ir XVII a. pirmos pusės, kai pirmosios Europoje įkūrusios nuolatines diplomatines pasiuntinybes popiežiaus ir Venecijos valstybės ypač aktyviai domėjosi aukso amžių išgyvenančia Lenkijos-Lietuvos valstybe, o kitų italų valstybėlių (Toskanos, Parmos–Pjačencos, Feraros ir kt.) kunigaikščiai samdydavo informatorius, periodiškai siuntusius jiems informaciją apie politinę padėtį Abiejų Tautų Respublikoje. Kadangi nėra galimybių paskelbti visų Lietuvos kariuomenės aprašymų, buvo atsirinkti keli tipiškiausi, gerai iliustruojantys to laikotarpio italų žinias apie LenkijosLietuvos kariuomenę. Laikotarpiui, kai Europa ypač susidomi Lenkija–Lietuva ir pradeda siųsti čia savo diplomatus, t. y. XVI a. pabaigai, pasirinkti keturi italų kilmės autoriai. XVII a. antrajai pusei, kai Abiejų Tautų Respublika išgyveno paskutinį savo politinio ir kultūrinio pakilimo laikotarpį ir kai ypač intensyviai ja domėjosi prancūzų kilmės rašytojai, pasirinkti keturi pastarųjų tekstai.
ENAbsolute majority of all Italians and French who have been to the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth in the 16th–17th century went there with an assignment or specific task. Almost no one travelled there for their pleasure. The majority of French sources comprise the memoirs of diplomats, recruits, courtiers of the Polish King and several travellers. The most French descriptions of Poland–Lithuania date back to the second half of the 17th century, when the political and cultural relationships between the Poland–Lithuania and France particularly intensified. The greatest portion of Italian material is comprised of the relations and correspondence of the Venetian ambassadors and papal nuncios. The most of them are from the second half of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century, when the state of Venetia and the Papal States, which were the first to establish permanent diplomatic embassies in Europe, were particularly actively interested in the state of Poland–Lithuania living its golden age, while the dukes of other small Italian states (Toscana, Parma-Piacenza, Ferrara etc) used to retain informers who periodically sent to them information about the political situation in the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth. Since it is not possible to publish all descriptions of the Lithuanian army, several of the most typical were chosen which illustrate well the knowledge possessed at that time by the Italians about the Poland–Lithuania troops. For the period, when Europe became especially interested in Poland–Lithuania and started dispatching its diplomats there, i.e. end of the 16th century, four authors of Italian origin were selected. Four texts by the French were chosen for the second half of the 17th century, when the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth lived its last political and cultural rise and was the focus of interest of writers of the French origin.
