Retorikos tradicija XIX amžiaus lietuvių literatūroje

LTRecenzijoje aptariamą Irenos Buckley monografiją sudaro pratarmė, įvadas, toliau aptariama retorikos samprata XIX a. Lietuvoje, tyrinėjamos retorinės kultūros apraiškos XIX a. pradžios lietuvių poezijoje ir istorinėje prozoje (Simonas Daukantas). Trečia dalis yra skirta XIX a. vidurio krikščioniškajai retorikai aptarti, čia analizės objektas – pamokslų tekstai. Paskutinėje dalyje nagrinėjama retorikos recepcija XIX a. pabaigos lietuvių literatūroje. Recenzijoje daugiau susitelkiama ties retorikos samprata XIX a. kultūroje ir Daukanto tekstų analize, kuri Buckley knygoje nėra be priekaištų, kaip pasirodė ankstesniems recenzentams (Sauliui Pivorui ir Brigitai Speičytei). Pirmasis įspūdis – jog kiekvienas knygos sakinys reikalauja komentaro. Recenzijoje peikiamas abejotinas metodas, netikslus terminų vartojimas ir jų painiojimas, pasitaikantys dalykiniai netikslumai, aptakus minties formulavimas. Buckley išeities tašku paima Aleksejaus Michailovo retorinės kultūros apibrėžimą, tačiau jo idėją supaprastina ir labai plačiai vartoja „retorinės kultūros" terminą. Kalbant apie Daukanto tekstus, retai atsižvelgiama į ankstesniųjų istorikų jam padarytą įtaką. Dažnai, kas knygoje yra priskiriama Daukantui, laikytina tradicinės istoriografijos elementais ar net vertimo atvejais. Nepateisinamas dalykas, kad lyginimo pagrindu klojant klasikinę retoriką, nesiremta nei Aristotelio, nei Cicerono, nei Kvintiliano retorikomis. Apibendrinant teigiama, kad knyga turi moksliškumo žymių, tačiau mokslų daktaro tekstas, kuriame remiamasi studentams skirtais vadovėliais, negali nekelti abejonių.

ENThe review discusses the monograph by Irena Buckley. The monograph consists of the foreword, the introduction, which is followed by a discussion of the concept of rhetoric in Lithuania in the 19th century. The monograph also studies expression of rhetoric culture in the Lithuanian poetry and historic prose at the beginning of the 19th century. The third section of the book discusses Christian rhetoric of the mid 19th centre. In this section preaching texts are the objects of the analysis. The last part is concerned with the analysis of the concept of rhetoric in the Lithuanian literature at the end of the 19th century. The review is mostly focused on the concept of rhetoric in the culture of the 19th century and the analysis of Daukantas’ texts, which leaves much room for reproach. The first impression is that every sentence of the book requires a remark. The review presents a doubtful method, inaccurate use or misuse of terms, discrepancies and vague thought expressions. Buckley bases her review on the defining of rhetoric by Aleksejus Michailovas; however, the author simplifies his idea and uses the term “rhetoric culture” in a very wide sense. As far as Daukantas’ texts are concerned, the author rarely regards to the influence eelier historians had on him. Statements attributed to Daukantas are usually elements of traditional historiography or even translations. The fact that the comparison is based on classical rhetoric, however, no references to rhetoric of Aristotle, Cicerone and Quintilian are presented. To summarise it can be stated that the book has certain scientific feature; however, a text produced by a doctor of science and based on textbooks intended for students will always provoke certain doubts.
