Summary / Abstract:

ENKėdainiai was one of private towns in Lithuania. For almost 300 years (from the middle of the 15th c. to the beginning of the 19th c.) Kėdainiai had been ruled by one of the most influential and richest Lithuanian nobility family - the Radvilos. Under the rule of representatives of the Dukes Radziwills' family branch of Gonionz - Medil, Kėdainiai developed and became an administtative centre of the whole Samogitia, and, in 1544 the town was mentioned as a big town by a mansion. From the middle of the 16th c. Kėdainiai became one of the earliest flashpoints of the Reformation spread in the Lithuanian lands of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania (GDL). From 1614 the town was owned by representatives of the Dukes Radvilos family branch of Biržai - Dubingiai. Under the rule of the Radvila Kšystofas, Jonušas and Boguslavas, Kėdainiai became one of the main economical centres of their mansions, one of the biggest Magdeburg towns in the GDL and a centre of the Reformation with 6 national and 6 confessional communities. Despite the fact that there was an ethnic and confessional diversity, in the 17t h c. Kėdainiai was one of the main centres of Lithuanistic studies in the GDL. Supposedly, these were the reasons why the Radziwills gave their attention to strengthen self—rule, economical and confessional life of Kėdainiai, but not to buildings of the mansion. Between 1666 and 1668 remains and sarcophaguses of K.Radziwill the Thunderer and his grandchildren Mikalojus, Jurgis, Steponas and Elžbieta had been moved from Vyžuonos to Kėdainiai Reformed Church. Jonušas was burried in the family crypt in 1676. Under certain circumstances in the 2nd half of the 17th c. Kėdainiai became a pantheon of the Radziwills branch of Biržai - Dubingiai and remained it up till now. [From the publication]
