Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article provides an overview of the history of the chapel in the Augailiai Village (Papilė district). The first wooden chapel of Agailiai was burned in 1917. In 1939, by attempts of the residents of the neighbouring villages, the new chapel was built, which stood until 1974. No burials were performed in the small graveyard, which existed by the chapel, however there were rumours of the magic of the graveyard and crosses were placed on it as gratitude for different healings. After the roof of the chapel burned in 1975, the chapel was repaired. According to the local residents, that was the time when the Šiauliai KGB was informed of the magic chapel. On 9 September 1975 the chapel was demolished by a bulldozer, the crosses were taken out of the ground and buried. A water-pond was arranged on the place of the chapel. However the people continued to place crosses in the place of the chapel. On the night of 22 June, 1984 the Soviet officers cut the crosses and took them away. Since then people no longer placed big crosses, only small ones. Construction of the new chapel was commenced in 1990. According to the old tradition, a High Mass is held each year on the Ascension Day and on the Thanksgiving Day. As previously, the chapel, supervised by the woodsmen of the Kuršėnai Forestry, is not locked. Crosses are placed on the hill near the chapel, a large cross was placed to commemorate the Independence of Lithuania. The outworn wooden crosses are stored in the chapel. The visitors register in the special book. During 2001-2005 the chapel was visited by 838 people (not only from the neighbouring localities, but also from Canada, the Netherlands and England). The whole complex can be viewed as a cult and a symbol of struggling for religious and political freedom.
