Summary / Abstract:

ENWhen the parish of believers built a sanctuary, the bells that were loaded were like a crown at the end of all work and worries. And a frequent bell is a value of technology and decorative art closely related to the history of the parish and the land. However, only a part of the bells produced or imported in Lithuania have received more detailed research so far. The tower of impressive Panemunis church, built in 1937 according to the project of the architect Jonas Bistromas, contains exceptional cultural heritage values, such as the bells cast in 1773 in Vilnius by Antanas Apanavičius and in 1936 at the Masalco factory in Kaunas. These two objects of campanology also have a historical memorial value, as they perpetuated the names of the donors and the marks of their time. The Great Bell is like a symbolic bridge between the centuries of the town; cast 250 years ago, it connects the distant times of the Panemunis monastery of regular penance canons and today’s religious life with spiritual ties. The name of the craftsman who recast the bronze bell made in Riga was determined based on the ornamentation used only in the Vilnius workshop and the inscribed quotation from the psalm verse. Attention should be drawn to the very original device to start swinging the bell. The experiences of the bell are presented in the article in the context of the history of the town of Panemunis and its church. Also discussed are the works of the Apanavičius dynasty of the Lithuanian casters from the second half of the 18th century and their significance for campanology in the region. Moreover, after determining the cultural value of the smaller church bell, cast in 1936 in Kaunas, the conclusion is drawn that both bells of the sanctuary should be included into the Register of Cultural Values of Lithuania and become accessible to those interested in cultural heritage.
