Power capabilities, external recognition, and sovereignty: the case of Lithuanian independence

LTLietuvos Respublika yra unikalus pavyzdys analizuojant suvereniteto pasiekimo ir išlaikymo klausimą, nes ji neatitinka empirinio atvejo, kada tautos-valstybės vystymosi procese suverenitetas gaunamas tik vieną kartą. XIII a. susikūrusi Lietuva, susidūrusi su įvairiomis istorinėmis kolizijomis, suverenitetą įgijo ir prarado ne vieną kartą. Žiūrint retrospektyviai, galima išsiaiškinti, kokį vaidmenį tokiuose procesuose suvaidino valdžios gebėjimai ir išorinis pripažinimas sudarant sąlygas nepriklausomybei. Straipsnyje yra analizuojami skirtingi Lietuvos istorijos tarpsniai nuo jos susikūrimo viduriniaisiais amžiais iki XX a. pabaigos, kada buvo atkurta Lietuvos Respublikos nepriklausomybė, leidžiantys geriau suprasti išorinių ir vidinių faktorių vaidmenį, jų prioretiškumą siekiant, išlaikant ir vėl įgyjant suverenitetą. ENThe Republic of Lithuania is a unique example for analysis of the issue of reaching and retaining the sovereignty, since it fails to correspond to the empiric case, where the sovereignty in the process of development of a nation/state is received only once. Lithuania, which came into existence in the 12th century and faced different historic collisions, obtained and lost its sovereignty more than once. Viewing retrospectively, one can identify the role of the abilities of the power in the processes and the external recognition for creation of the conditions for independence. The article analyzes different phases of the history of Lithuania starting from its emergence in the Medieval times till the end of the 20th century, when the independence of the Republic of Lithuania was reinstated, which provides the possibility to get a better understanding of the role of the external and internal factors and their priority in reaching for, retaining and re-obtaining of the independence.
