Giedrius Subačius. Upton Sinclair: the Lithuanian Jungle: [recenzija]

LTRecenzijoje aptariama Giedriaus Subačiaus knyga apie amerikiečių rašytojo Upton‘o Sinclair‘o romaną „Džiunglės“. Pirmajame Subačiaus knygos skyriuje aptariamos lietuvių ir jos atstovų, kaip pagrindinių romano vaikėjų, vaizdavimo pasirinkimo priežastys, kurių autorius išskiria dvi. Pirmoji – Sinclair‘ui didelį įspūdį palikusios lietuviškų vestuvių apeigos ir tradicijos; antroji – Ernest‘o Poole straipsnis, paskelbtas dienraštyje „The Independent“ 1904 m., pasirašytas lietuviška Antano Kaztauskio pavarde. Antrame skyriuje svarstoma, kuo romano autorių patraukė lietuvių kalba. Subačiaus nuomone, Sinclair‘o vartojami lietuvių kalbos žodžiai atspindi žemaičių tarmės ypatybes, tačiau, recenzento nuomone, žemaitizmams priskiriami tarties aspektai gali būti svetimos kalbos atstovo klaidingos transkripcijos rezultatas. Skyriuje minimi lietuviškų žodžių ortografiniai ypatumai, pastebima, kad vietoje dabartinės bendrinės kalbos <č> and <š>, Sinclair‘o vartoti digrafai and , taisyklingai rašyta raidė . Apžvelgdamas trečiajame skyriuje rekonstruotas lietuviškų pavardžių lytis recenzentas pastebi, jog dėl lietuviškų garsų /e/ vs /a/, kurie fonetiškai skiriasi tik žodžio pradžios pozicijoje, tarp pavardžių Biarczynskas ir Berczynskas nėra reikšmingo fonologinio skirtumo. Recenzentas pritaria Išvadų minčiai, anot kurios, romanas „Džiunglės“, skirtingai nei Amerikoje, Lietuvoje didelio susidomėjimo nesulaukė todėl, kad jo vertimą inicijavo sovietinio rėžimo atstovai – dėl šios priežasties galėjo būti manoma, jog romane vaizduotas iškreiptas amerikietiškojo gyvenimo vaizdas.

ENThe review discusses the book about American writer Upton Sinclair’s novel “The Jungle” by Giedrius Subačius. The first chapter of the book discusses the two reasons for choosing to depict Lithuanians as the main characters. The first reason is the impression that Sinclair had with regard to Lithuanian wedding rituals and traditions; the second one is the article by Ernest Poole published in the daily “The Independent” in 1904 and signed after the Lithuanian name of Antanas Kaztauskis. The second chapter discusses in what the Lithuanian language attracted the author. According to Subačius, the Lithuanian words used by Sinclair reflect the features of the Samogitian dialect; however, the aspects of pronunciation attributed to the Samogitian dialect might be the result of a faulty transcription by a representative of a foreign language. The chapter mentions the orthographical features of Lithuanian words and observes that Sinclair used digraphs and instead of <č> and <š> of the present standard language and that he correctly wrote the letter . Reviewing the forms of Lithuanian surnames reconstructed in the third chapter, the reviewer notes that there is no significant phonological difference between the surnames Biarczynskas and Berczynskas because of Lithuanian sounds /e/ vs /a/ that phonetically differ only in the start position of the word. The reviewer agrees with the idea of conclusions that the novel “The Jungle” has not received a considerable attention in Lithuania, unlike in America, because its translation has been initiated by the representatives of the Soviet regime – due to this reason the readers could assume that the novel conveys a distorted picture of American life.
