Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article examines the use of handwriting and signatures to identify their author and to determine valid case circumstances and discusses methods of presenting comparative material, especially experimental samples. Questioned document examination (graphology) is used to determine the authenticity of the writing or signature. Qualitative comparative material is almost 100% accurate in identifying a person. Comparative material consists of fluent, conditionally fluent and experimental samples. Fluent samples are found in documents written before the criminal case was brought,. The accused must produce them on demand. Conditionally fluent samples appear in case documents, interrogation records, searches, confrontations, statements and applications for courts, actions and summons. The expert needs experimental samples to compare coincidences and disparities of the separate elements of letters and numbers, and combinations of letters, features of linking words, letters and numbers, the characters in signatures, etc. Such samples are valuable because their origin and authenticity are undisputed. They allow us to observe the writing process and receive manuscripts relevant to the investigation in terms of text content, language, and the forming of characters under certain conditions. The experimental research works of scientists N. Radvila, A. Vaitkevičius, E. Seling, J. Safchin, K. Klutter, R. Sandek, R. Werner, J. Lafontan, Z. Czeczot, and M. Hecker on the preparation of comparative material are reviewed in this article. The fourth section recommends methods of preparing, collecting and presenting experimental samples of handwriting and signatures for examination.
