The role of historical context in Hypatia Yčas' novel Springtime in Lithuania

LTStraipsnio tikslas -- atskleisti istorinius literatūros aspektus, parodyti artimus ryšius tarp autobiografijos ir fikcijos, tarp fikcijos ir istorijos. Straipsnyje, remiantis Naujojo istorizmo postulatais, analizuojamas Hypatijos Yčas, lietuvių kilmės rašytojos ir žurnalistės, dabar gyvenančios Jungtinėse Amerikos Valstijose, autobiografinis romanas "Springtime in Lithuania" (2000, liet. -- "Pavasaris Lietuvoje"). 2000 m. anglų kalba išleistame romane aprašomas istoriniu požiūriu svarbus laikotarpis -- tarpukario periodas Lietuvoje. Rašytoja pateikia daugelio to meto žymių žmonių ir svarbių istorinių įvykių aprašymus, susieja juos su savo paauglystės laikotarpio išgyvenimais.

ENHypatia Yčas' autobiographical novel, written in English, can be considered a good source of information on the social and political situation in Lithuania in the period between World War One and World War Two. Hypatia Yčas, an expatriate journalist and writer living in the United States, remembers the days of her youth spent in her motherland, Lithuania. Thus, the author's youth coincides with the re-establishment of Independent Lithuania, or the "springtime" of the country. The novel includes valuable sketches of famous people and events, and presents an interesting and vivid picture of Kaunas, the Provisional capital of Lithuania. The discussion of the novel is based on the analysis of historical and autobiographical elements within the framework of New Historicism.
