Summary / Abstract:

ENThe article analyzes the particularities of functioning of Vilnius marketplaces during 35 years’ period in the end of the 18th – beginning of the 19th century, which were determined by the conjuncture of the economy of the city and the entire area, radical political events and military activities. The growth of number of residents in the city resulted in the growth of the need for different goods. Shops, street merchants, markets and fairs competed and divided the internal trade space of the city and consumers between each other. Although, in terms of quantity, shops prevailed, the place of traditional way of trade, i. e. the marketplace, was a significant link of the common trade and economic structure of the city, since the marketplace provided a possibility to purchase the most necessary goods – foodstuffs, fodder, firewood and the local craftsmen could both purchase the materials, necessary for their crafts and sell their goods. The marketplace was an important source of stable revenues for the magistrate and, starting from 1808 – for the Duma. The revenues were received as different charges, collected from the people, selling their goods in the marketplace. The activities of the most important marketplaces of Vilnius area were regulated by the rules, which were not applicable to other marketplaces. The most complicated problem of administration of marketplaces was fighting the speculation. The available data provide the possibility to state that the list of the goods, sold at Vilnius city marketplaces exceeded forty items. The majority of the goods were foodstuffs, the most important of which were grains and their products.
