ENThe restoration of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is among the major projects to mark the 1000th anniversary of Lithuania. The restored Palace should again become a symbol of long tradition of Lithuanian statehood and national pride, an important centre of civic education, nurturance of historical conscience and representation of cultural heritage as well as a point of tourist attraction. It is planned that the rebuilt palace will be opened to the public in 2009. The restored residence of the grand dukes of Lithuania is intended to house a multifunctional historical centre for culture and a national museum of a historical-residence type. Along with permanent exhibits showing partially restored historical interiors, the palace will serve as a place of intense educational activity and the venue for exhibitions, concerts, conferences and official state events. It is also meant to serve as a cultural tourism information point. As a multifunctional museum of historical-residence nature, the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania will have to perform the following functions: representation of the state, its history and rulers as well as court culture and artistic heritage; serving the function of a museum; the educational role; and dissemination of tourism information. The main objectives of the Palace as a cultural institution should include civic education, promotion of the interest and display of the Lithuanian historical, cultural and artistic heritage, and the development of historical consciousness. To achieve the objectives and to perform the functions listed it is first planned to offer visitors four museum tours: 1) a didactic-approach exhibit of the historical and architectural evolution of the palace and the surrounding area; 2) restored representative interiors of the palace; 3) a multifunctional hall for musical, theatrical and other events, which will contain didactic exhibits of the objects of everyday life and pieces relating to musical life; 4) an exhibition centre. The exhibits would differ in their content, chronology, form, nature of showpieces and the display means and methods. The first two tours are intended as the main tours, which will present the various aspects of the evolution of the palace and its historic role using different types of display techniques. The other two tours will be more specialized and more adapted to the needs of the present day, though they will partly reflect the historical role of this memorial object. Visitors will be offered the opportunity to have their own routes for viewing the exhibits of the residence. Along with museum tours, it is planned to create a wide range of opportunities for the dissemination of cultural and tourist information as well as provision of services to visitors. Special attention is to be devoted to education programs for school groups, students as well as other social groups. The restored Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania will serve as an important addition to the infrastructure of culture and tourism and the system of museums in Lithuania. It will hopefully become an exceptional institution because of its attractiveness (along with other aspects of activity and involvement in cultural supply) and due to a quite early chronology of the restored interiors and the objects displayed (late Gothic, Renaissance, and early Baroque). The mission of the exhibits of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania is to fill in the chronological and thematic gap in the knowledge on Lithuanian court culture and artistic heritage and to compensate for the historically determined losses in the heritage of courtly culture. The Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania should become the gateway to tourism in Lithuania and Vilnius. [From the publication]
