Summary / Abstract:

LTIšeivijos grafikai (V. Petravičius, P. Augius, T. Valius, A. Dargis, V. Ignas, R. Viesulas, P. Gailius, M. Stankūnienė ir kt.) labiau negu kitų dailės šakų menininkai išsaugojo tautinio savitumo bruožus, nuosekliau tęsė dar Lietuvoje susiklosčiusias menines tradicijas.

ENThe expatriate graphicists (V. Petravičius, P. Augius, T. Valius, A. Dargis, V. Ignas, R. Viesulas, P. Gailius, M. Stankūnienė, etc.) preserved the characteristics of the national identity to a greater extent than artists of other branches and continued the artistic traditions, which came into existence in Lithuania. A good deal of their works, as during the earlier period, referred the folk worldview, expressing the spirit of the nation and the experience of the folk art. Their graphics were connected to the totality of Lithuanian culture, its heritage and further development during the post-war decades by multiple relations. The plastic expression of the graphics became more modern, they integrated into the development of art of other lands, not losing the Lithuanian mentality. Most expatriates’ graphics works were closely related to Lithuanian literature, especially poetry, book publishing and the press. On the other hand, the expatriate artists experienced the direct impact of the art of the lands of their residence and the modernism as such. Therefore in the best of their graphic works the nationality is not in conflict with the universal content and the Lithuanian artistic traditions are connected with the world’s culture. The expatriates’ graphics, which devotedly nurtured the national identity and also grasped lots of principles of the modern art, have enriched Lithuanian art with a controversial experience of exodus, as well as with the dialectics of devotion and liberation. All of the aforementioned evidences the national identity of the expatriates’ graphics, the most important expressions of which are analyzed in the article.
