Summary / Abstract:

Dr. vysk. V.Padolskio vadovaujama Akademija sustiprėjo, įsitvirtino – išaugo narių skaičius, tapo žinoma visuomenei, ėmėsi svarbių darbų: organizavo LKMA suvažiavimus, planavo knygų serijos leidimą, steigė centrus bei skyrius. LKMA Centro valdybos pirmosios kadencijos metu dr.vysk. V.Padolskio pastangomis buvo padėti tvirti pagrindai tolesnei Akademijos veiklai.

ENBishop Vincentas Padolskis (1904 04 21–1960 05 06) left clear footprints in the history of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences (LCAS). After completing his studies in the West, defending two doctoral dissertations in Theology (Rome) and Philosophy (Fribourg), he returned to Lithuania in 1930. Relatively quickly he was again sent abroad for studies of the Bible. Padolskis studied for several years at the Bible Institute in Rome and after earning a licentiate degree returned to Lithuania in 1932. In Lithuania, Padolskis along with many other Catholic intellectuals of the time joined in the activities of the Lithuanian Catholic Academy of Sciences: he participated in all three congresses (in 1933, 1936 and 1939) in the period between the wars, even serving as the chairman of the third congress. He was elected to the lea dership of the Theology section, presented papers, participated in discussions. After withdrawing to the West, Bishop Padolskis at the urging of Stasys Antanas Bačkis began to restore the activities of the Academy abroad. He became the chairman of the Reorganization Commission and after the re-establishment of the LCAS was elected as its chairman (1956–1959).During his first term as head of the Executive Committee, the LCAS became stronger, the number of its members increased, it became more established – it be came better known and began to carry out important works. This was undoubtedly due to the contribution of its chairman Bishop Padolskis. A congress of the LCAS was organized in Rome in 1957, the publication of a se ries of books was planned, a research center with departments and chapters was founded. It was not possible to complete all the work, but firm foundations for many of them were laid and the results were achieved already after the death of Padolskis. Nevertheless, the fact that Lithuanian Catholic scholars living abroad understood the meaning and worth of their scholarly work is without doubt a result of its first chairman Bishop Vincentas Padolskis.
