ENThe nature of the main segments in Lithuanian museum traditions and modernity discourse of the 19th through the 21st centuries - selection of museological objects, types of museums, system of museums and their accessibility - suggest that the process of increasing modernization of museums is intertwined with deep traditions. Museums are traditionally related to the concept of the historical evolution of a country. Over the span of two hundred years, historical museums have been prevalent and museum education has predominantly had a historical character. This has been determined by the ideologization of culture. Since the end of the 20th century new technologies have offered increased possibilities for museums and the information society presented new requirements with respect to their social mission. This have encouraged change and modernization. Yet the progress in the area of increased access to museums and museological values has been idle because of a slow pace of attitude change concerning the priorities of museum modernization (for example, museums have been inssuficiently active in automating documentation of museum objects). The programme of Lithuanian museum modernization for 2007-2015 sets out traditional priorities and is directed at the modernization of traditional museums rather than the establishment of new and modern ones. To date, Lithuania does not yet have any virtual museums.
